Tabletop icebergs, growlers, drift or pack ice... the Antarctic has its own language, which you’ll soon speak fluently!
We are offering you a chance to sail through the Heart of the Peninsula who offers travellers an enchanting polar desert, a final frontier surrounded by a gigantic ice sheet. This is a fascinating journey to the heart of this remote land, Penguins live in their thousands, waddling on the shores, whilst Humpback Whales come and swim alongside ships.
Highlights of this cruise:
Situated on the Beagle Strait, Ushuaia is the largest city in Argentine Tierra del Fuego, and arguably the southernmost city in the world. In the past, the town has been a missionary base, penal colony and naval base for the Argentine navy. Ushuaia is now a major tourist town, complete with casinos and nice restaurants, and commonly used as a base for hiking, winter sports and cruises to Antarctica
Founded just over one hundred years ago, this rustic town is situated amidst incredible snowcapped mountains, dramatic waterfalls, massive glaciers, and a forest known for its red foliage. Tierra del Fuego, the "Land of Fire," twelve miles to the west of Ushuaia, is known for its glacial landscape and its national park, which is a bird-watcher's paradise.
The Drake Passage or Mar de Hoces -Sea of "Hoces"- is the body of water between the southern tip of South America at Cape Horn, Chile and the South Shetland Islands of Antarctica. It connects the southwestern part of the Atlantic Ocean (Scotia Sea) with the southeastern part of the Pacific Ocean and extends into the Southern Ocean. The passage is named after the 16th century English privateer Sir Francis Drake and has the reputation for having some of the roughest sea weather on earth.
Across this stretch of ocean the climate changes from the cool, humid, subpolar type found at Tierra del Fuego to the frozen conditions of Antarctica. Ships in the passage are often good platforms for the sighting of whales, dolphins and plentiful seabirds including giant petrels, other petrels, albatrosses and penguins.
Deception Island is an island in South Shetland off the Antarctic Peninsula, which has one of the safest harbours in Antarctica. A recently active volcano in 1967 and 1969 caused serious damage to the local scientific stations. The only current research bases are run by Argentina and Spain.
Over half the island is covered in glaciers; its centre is a huge flooded caldera which forms a large bay called Port Foster. Attractions include swimming at Pendulum Cove, giant icebergs, penguins, seals, whales, pack ice, sea birds and more.
